AIDS

Daum's point in her article about AIDS education is a really good point. She says "a corrosion of the soul,a chronic dishonesty, and a fear of themselves that will...do more damage then the disease itself." This is true because everyone is afraid of getting AIDS and nobody wants to give people AIDS. It affects your attitude in the face that your always scared of getting the disease. It makes you ask questions and have a general dishonest feeling of the person your about to sleep with. I like how she ended her article with "In this world, peace of mind is a Utopian concept." This quote shows her stand on AIDS education and I agree with her. When we had health and learned about sexual education there is a big chunk of it that is just about AIDS prevention and safe sex. When you learn about it they show you diseases and of course no one wants any of those things they are disgusting. That is how they get you to practice safe sex and for the most part it is a good strategy and effective for most people. At the same time it makes us scared to sleep around because we are afraid of getting AIDS. Then the example of the clothing company using pictures of models and some with AIDS written across their face and she called and asked if they actually had the disease. Which they did not and it was just another thing to scare the youth and make money off of it. Basically everything comes back to money and shaping how younger generations think and try to control them.

Drinking in college

Drinking in college is all part of the college experience whether you like it or not. Every kid I know goes out every weekend and has fun. College is stressful and its something to look forward too and a reason to get all your work done. It is entirely up to you how much you drink and everyone should know their limit. No matter how many awareness programs, studies, or suspensions you provide kids are still going to drink. Some kids take it too far but when you start blaming companies for that then that is wrong. They did not make that kid chug whiskey which is a terrible idea to any normal human being, they are just making a living and their living is selling alcohol. When I said that drinking is part of the college experience it is where you make a lot of memories with your friends. Those are the times you will remember not the times you sat in class or did homework. Just be safe when you do it and have fun that is all there is too it.

This issue of businesses using Facebook and other social media as a way to get to know who they are employing has 2 sides. You either think its wrong for them to view your profile or you think it is the persons fault for posting stuff they do not want an employer to see. I personally think companies should refrain from using Facebook as a hiring tool unless they really need it. I do think if it is between two people for a job and they are almost identical then you can look at their Facebook's. If one kid is dumb enough to post a bunch of pictures of him drinking and the other kid doesn't have those pictures then he is definitely going to get the job. If you think about it from a companies perspective they are paying you for your work and they are looking for the best worker possible. They can and will look at everything to determine if your the best and that is all there is to it. If your a kid just keep your drinking pictures in your phone to show people you don't have to post them online knowing your going to be looked at in a couple of years for a job to start your career.

Focusing on Friends

What Steve Tesich wrote about in his essay was true in the sense that guys don't actually talk about how much they mean to each other. Girls come right out and say how much they mean to each other along with girls to guys or guys to girls it is the same way. The qualities you share with your close guy friends are just having fun and laughing. Then whenever a guy talks to a girl they care about they talk about deeper stuff and how they actually feel. You behave differently with different friends because they are different relationships that you guys share. The scene where they pretend to fly to America in that truck shows imagination as a child with a friend. We all have had experiences as a child with imagination there are countless stories. As you grow older you lose that imagination and people change, relationships change. Then at the end of the essay he talks about how he is gonna free the women he knows, which I think he means he is gonna be more open with his friends on how much they actually mean to him. He puts that at the end and tells stories of his three friends in the body paragraphs to kind of show how he actually cares about them but doesn't know how to tell them.
